Is BMW's i3 Profitable? - Motor Trend

Engineering cost experts Munro & Associates say “probably”

The quirky-looking BMW i3 is the first carbon-fiber-intensive car that’s both affordable and built in significant volumes. Those two qualifiers might fit more comfortably in quotation marks, given the $42,300 starting price and modest 100-a-day production rate, but they’re apt by comparison with the Lambos, McLarens, Ferraris, and Boeing 787s also built of the tough black fibers. Pioneering a new technology like this can be an expensive undertaking. Toyota’s original Prius, the first mass-produced, affordable gas-electric hybrid, for example, was brought to market at a price that is widely understood to have covered virtually none of its huge development cost.
