Further proving that all the good geographical names have been taken for automotive nomenclature, luxury automaker Bentley has formally announced the name of its upcoming first-ever SUV at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will be known as the Bentley Bentayga (pronounced "ben-TAY-gah"), named after a rugged peak in the subtropical Canary Islands. No specific details are yet known about the Bentayga, except that Bentley is confident it will be not only a highly luxurious vehicle, but also a highly capable one.

"Bentayga is a name that reflects what we know our SUV will do better than any other car in the world — combine the best automotive luxury with outstanding performance to take the Bentley experience to new environments," said Bentley chairman and CEO Wolfgang Durheimer in a statement. The announcement follows what has been an ongoing development of the Bentley EXP 9 F concept SUV that the brand unveiled at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show, which reportedly did not test well with prospective buyers. The company also announced that the production Bentayga will be unveiled sometime later this year.
