Report: Volvo XC40 Compact CUV to Debut Later This Year

According to a new report from Autocar, the budget-friendly Volvo XC40 compact SUV will be revealed later this year. The XC40 will be the first car to be built on Volvo’s new CMA platform and will be the first model in the eventual “40” series lineup.

The XC40 occupies the same segment as the popular BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Visually, it should share much of the same handsome bodylines as the Volvo XC90 SUV and S90 sedan as previewed by the Volvo 40.1 concept (pictured). Inside, expect a premium environment evocative of the Swedish heritage.

Predictably, Volvo won’t stop with the XC40. Autocar says a V40 wagon will appear on the CMA platform as well and we wouldn’t be surprised to see the S40 sedan return to our shores.

A redesigned XC60 will launch this year as well, providing a much-needed clean-slate for the brand’s most popular model. “The XC60 is our biggest-volume car that sells broadly in Europe, China and America,” Volvo R&D boss Henrik Green told Autocar at the 2017 Detroit auto show. “It brings significant profits so is crucial in many aspects. [The new model is] a fantastic car, a big step forward.”

Following the launch of the XC60, expect a redesigned V60 wagon and S60 sedan to follow soon after, all wearing the same gorgeous design derivative of the current XC90, S90, and V90. After the model portfolio is healthy and young, Volvo plans to launch its first all-electric model in 2019.
