Ferrari 812 Superfast Revealed Ahead of Geneva Debut

If you thought LaFerrari was the most arrogant, narcissistic name Ferrari could come up with, think again. The prancing horse brand just announced the Ferrari 812 Superfast ahead of its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.

Granted, the car will live up to its name thanks to a 789-hp, 530-lb-ft 6.5-liter V-12—the most powerful engine in the automaker’s history. The 812 Superfast is based on the mid-front-engine F12 Berlinetta, and represents the next evolutionary step from the 770-hp F12tdf, Ferrari’s last most powerful model.

Ferrari says the Superfast’s engine is new, and makes maximum power at 8,500 rpm and max torque at 7,000 rpm, though 80 percent of its torque is available at just 3,500 rpm. The engine’s rev-tastic power output is made possible by a new 350-bar direct-injection system and variable-geometry intake tracts derived from Formula 1 technology. The V-12 is backed by a dual-clutch transmission with an unrevealed number of specific gear ratios optimized for shorter shift times and sharpened throttle response. The drivetrain package is said to be good for 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of more than 211 mph.

The 812 Superfast will be the first Ferrari to utilize electric power steering (the LaFerrari had a hydraulic system run by an electric pump). How this system will affect road feel remains to be seen, but Ferrari insists it used the technology to “fully exploit the potential of the car’s performance.” The 812 Superfast will also get version 5.0 of Ferrari’s Side Slip Control system and a new Virtual Short Wheelbase system that’s intended to improve handling and response.

The 812 still resembles the F12 in profile, but gets some notable changes up front and in back. The headlights and front fascia have been redesigned, with the lower valance now featuring active flaps to improve aerodynamics. Around back there are four taillights instead of two, and a new airflow bypass at the C-pillar increases downforce. Inside, the dash has been redesigned along with the seats.

The Ferrari 812 Superfast will be available at launch in a new Rosso Settanta shade of red, which celebrates Ferrari’s 70th anniversary. The latest Ferrari makes its debut next month at the Geneva show, where we will no doubt make fun of its ridiculous name again.
