Report: Subaru Receives Permit to Test Self-Driving Cars in California

Subaru has received a permit from the DMV that allows it to test self-driving cars in the state of California. According to a report from Endgadget, the Subaru received an Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit from the California DMV on February 9. This brings the total number of companies testing autonomous driving technology in California to 22, and it includes a number of big names including Ford, NVIDIA, and Google.

It’s possible that Subaru will test new additions to its EyeSight active safety suite, which currently includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and sway warning, and lane keeping assist. Recently, Subaru has expanded the EyeSight safety suite with the addition of reverse automatic emergency braking. Endgadget states that there’s not much known as to what Subaru intends to test but it does point out that the automaker wants to develop addition active driving aids including auto start/stop in slow traffic. The report also notes that the automaker wants to offer automatic lane changing and steering through curves, bends and turns on its vehicles by 2020.

With the exception of the rear-drive BRZ coupe and vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the EyeSight active safety suite is available on every Subaru model sold in the U.S. market.
