It’s been quite a while since Lexus significantly updated its flagship sedan, so the all-new 2018 Lexus LS sedan shown at the 2017 Detroit auto show was a welcome sight. Here is a look at the new car’s all-new styling inside and out.
While the outgoing Lexus LS already featured the automaker’s signature spindle grille, the new model’s mug is much more aggressive with more extreme angles and a more pronounced mesh insert. Trapezoidal-shaped headlight housings and HID projector headlights have been replaced with new LED headlights with aggressive “wings” for the daytime running lights.
Along the side, the 2018 LS features a lower-slung and longer profile thanks to 1.3-inch longer wheelbase and lower hood (1.2 inches), trunk (1.6 inches), and overall height (0.6 inche). Where the outgoing car had slab sides with few pronounced side body lines, the new car features prominent front and rear fenders over the wheel wells and scalloped doors with a low body line that rises from just aft of the front fender toward the rear wheels. The roofline flows smoothly into the rear decklid giving the appearance of a fastback. Additionally, the rear quarter window is pulled into the C-pillar and out of the rear door.
Around back, the trunk lid is more pronounced and sits higher than the rear quarter panels. The taillights are also now slimmer and reach farther forward into the quarter panels. The chrome strip across the trunk lid now frames the inside of the taillights, while a new chrome strip below the taillights reaches down the vertical edge of the quarter panel. The trapezoidal exhaust tips carry over.
Inside, the gauge cluster now features a large center gauge flanked by two smaller gauges, while the center stack gains a larger center mounted screen. The dashboard clock moves to the side of the screen and the center vents have been integrated into the dashboard design.

Last week, we took a look at the redesigned Honda Odyssey minivan, which got lots of negative comments. Many were immediately turned off simply because it’s a family vehicle, like DrJayDub, who said, “Uh, it is a minivan, so definitely revolting.” Rlsedition offered a more in-depth analysis: “This new Odyssey makes the Pacifica look great. Those criss-crossing feature lines in side view near the ‘broke back’ lightning bolt accentuate what has to be one of the worst design elements ever.”
Not all comments were negative: Trucking it up said, “The new Odyssey looks great. It’s a refreshing interpretation of the family minivan that really contrasts how much the old model had started to age.” And Brian Rosado thought, “A typical inoffensive look but certainly a clean conservative style that’s easy on the eyes.”
