It’s already time for the S550 Ford Mustang’s mid-cycle refresh, and if these heavily camouflaged prototypes are any indication, we should see some significant changes for the 2018 model year. Spy shooters have snapped the 2018 Ford Mustang in both coupe and convertible form in Detroit.
Though we still can’t see much through the camo, we expect the front fascia to feature moderate changes, including new headlights with LED rings. Look closely through the slits in the camo and you get a peek at the new headlight design. And while it’s hard to make out any changes made to the rear end, the fact that it’s completely covered up should be an indication that we can expect a few revisions.
As we previously reported, the 2018 Ford Mustang is said to be next in line to receive the 10-speed automatic transmission co-developed by Ford and GM. A 10-speed option in the Mustang would be the third application in the Ford lineup, following the F-150 Raptor and F-150 3.5 EcoBoost. A 10-speed Mustang would also have something in common with the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which shares the same transmission.
The updates should arrive just in time for Ford dealers, as Mustang sales have slumped in recent months, forcing the automaker to idle the plant that build the pony car last week. The face-lifted 2018 Ford Mustang could debut as soon as early 2017.
