Aston Martin and Red Bull’s AM-RB 001 jump-started the hybrid hypercar party. ESPN reports that Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff went on record saying that AMG’s next hypercar will have a true Formula One powertrain.
“It’s awesome that we have finally put an F1 engine, a real F1 engine, in a real road car — this is not F1-like technology,” Wolff told ESPN.
“Real F1 technology in a road car is quite a difficult technical exercise if you imagine all the cooling that is necessary, but the data I have seen gives me goose bumps.”
Mercedes recently confirmed the project at the 2016 Paris auto show. The mid-engine hypercar, dubbed R50 by Stuttgart snitches, was previously reported as having a 2.0-liter turbo-four or a Formula One-inspired V-6 engine.
Only time will tell us what the new hypercar’s powertrain will really be, but an all-wheel drive, F1-powered road car with over 1300 hp must be bonkers.
The beast is expected to make its debut in time for Mercedes-AMG’s 50th anniversary next year. Bring on the goose bumps, Affalterbach.
