The 2017 Genesis G80 is rated a Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and has also earned a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
This isn’t completely surprising as the 2017 G80 is largely unchanged from the 2016 Genesis, when it was still sold under the Hyundai brand and earned top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA. That said, the Genesis G80 now comes standard with a long list of advanced safety tech including emergency forward collision prevention, which is required for TSP+ status. The G80 earned a “Superior” rating in that test, the highest score available.
The IIHS also gave the G80 a “Good” rating in all five areas of its crashworthiness evaluation, including the small overlap front test. When it comes to the ease of use of its LATCH child seat anchors, the G80 earned a “Marginal” rating from the IIHS.
The NHTSA also didn’t change its ratings for the G80, awarding the sedan a five-star rating in most of the administration’s test criteria including its rollover test.
As previously reported, the 2017 Genesis G80 reached showrooms this summer with a base price that increased by $2,650 compared to the 2016 Hyundai Genesis. New standard features include the aforementioned safety tech and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The G80 is powered by a 311-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 or an optional 420-hp, 5.0-liter V-8.
