Jeep Wrangler Recalled for Sensor Issue, Ram Pickups for Fire Risk

Fiat Chrysler has announced two separate recalls affecting a total of more than 257,000 vehicles in the U.S.

2016-2017 Jeep Wrangler Recall

The Problem: In certain situations, wiring may disconnect from the vehicles’ impact sensors. The front impact sensor may not work, and thus the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners may not activate in the event of a crash.

FCA says it doesn’t know of any crashes or injuries that have occurred as a result of the wiring issue. The recall was initiated after the problem cropped up in a routine, in-house crash test. Some late-model FCA vehicles have been recalled for a similar problem.

The Fix: FCA will reroute the wiring at no charge to consumers. Starting on or around November 25, owners will be notified when they can bring their vehicles into dealerships for the repair, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: FCA says the issue affects an estimated 182,743 model-year 2016-2017 Jeep Wranglers in the U.S. The affected vehicles were manufactured between June 16, 2015, and August 14, 2016, according to documents filed with NHTSA. All 2017 Jeep Wranglers under recall are in the automaker’s possession.

2007-2013 Ram 2500 and 3500/2011-2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit Recall

The Problem: The alternators are prone to short-circuits, which can lead to engine stalling or a fire. FCA says it’s aware of one possible injury related to this problem. The recall comes as a result of an FCA investigation into the performance of its fleet vehicles.

“Certain alternators supplied to the Company may be subject to premature diode wear following frequent load cycling, at or near maximum amperage, in hot ambient temperatures – conditions more consistent with fleet-vehicle usage than that of retail customers,” FCA said in a statement.

The Fix: FCA will notify owners when they can take their vehicles to dealerships, which will replace the faulty alternators.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: FCA says the recall involves 74,833 vehicles in the U.S., including certain 2007-2013 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups; 3500, 4500, and 5500 chassis cabs, and 2011-2014 Dodge Charger Pursuit police vehicles.
