In a Facebook post, David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan asked fans for a car they can rescue for around $3,000. The requirements: The car must be able to run and survive a drive back to Southern California. After sifting through about 300 responses, the duo settled on a 1970 Dodge Challenger dirt track racer up in Oregon.
Freiburger and Finnegan make the trek up north to buy the car sight unseen from a seller who lives on a llama farm. The seller also has a large and eclectic stash of classic Mopar vehicles in various conditions.
The car they choose has been fully welded closed and includes a roll cage fabricated with water pipe that has been screwed together. The roll bar is the first thing to go so they can put the interior together.
Once they finally get the car running with headlights installed, they head out on their adventure – but not for long. The car encounters driveshaft issues and suffers from a dry transmission. After topping off the tranny, they had back to the llama farm to inspect the driveshaft. They remove the makeshift safety loop, install new wheels and tires, and reset the alignment. After a quick burnout, they are back on the road.
