Mitsubishi has delayed launching new versions of the Outlander and Outlander Sport as it explores ways to share crossover components with Nissan, reports Automotive News.
Nissan could share the architecture and underlying parts of the Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport with Mitsubishi, a supplier executive told the publication. The move could be part of a plan set forth by Mitsubishi boss Carlos Ghosn to save 49 billion yen ($427.1 million) in the next fiscal year through product sharing, joint manufacturing, and other efforts. Now, the Outlander is slated to debut in late 2019 or early 2020, while the Outlander Sport won’t arrive until after 2020, says another supplier executive involved with the matter.
Although Mitsubishi hasn’t confirmed product delays, it says it’s taking another look at its products. “Now we are reviewing our future product lineup in order to maximize the alliance synergy effect,” spokesman Tetsuji Inoue told AN. “We will announce this matter at an appropriate time.”
As we previously reported, Mitsubishi plans to shrink the Outlander Sport and grow the Outlander. That will make room for the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a sportier, coupe-styled crossover that will slot between the two models. The Eclipse Cross heads to European dealerships later this fall before coming to the U.S. in early 2018.
