Hyundai i30 N Goes Winter Testing (W/Video)

Just before spring arrives, Hyundai took its new hot hatch for a round of winter testing in Arjeplog, Sweden. The Hyundai i30 N will launch in Europe during the second half of this year.

In the video below, Thierry Neuville pilots the i30 N over a frozen lake, testing the car’s steering, tires, suspension, and other components in extreme weather conditions. Hyundai’s World Rally Championship driver notes the car is almost ready for primetime, saying it “feels quite near to a racing car.” During the tests, temperatures reached as low as -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit).

Hyundai hasn’t spilled all the details on its new hot hatch that will compete with the Volkswagen GTI and Ford Focus ST. But according to reports, the car could launch with front-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter turbo-four making at least 255 hp. A higher-performance variant could be in the cards later down the line.

The N will be the third model in Hyundai’s new i30 lineup. In addition to the performance model, Hyundai also said it would launch wagon and fastback versions of the i30. Unfortunately, it’s unclear if our market will get anything beyond the standard i30 hatch, which is known as the Elantra GT here.
