Ford Introduces Automated Kiosk to Simplify Service Visits

Ford is testing an automated kiosk that allows customers to drop off and pick up their vehicles from the dealership at any time with the click of a button.

The Smart Service Kiosk, created with the help of Panasonic, launched at a Ford dealership in Michigan this January. After a test run of 90 days, Ford will consider expanding the service.

Once at the kiosk, customers will scan the QR code on their driver’s license and type their email address and phone number on the touchscreen. After entering information about the vehicle, the kiosk prompts drivers to create a security PIN and select the services they want completed on their vehicle. The kiosk is programmed to process requests related to the brakes, cooling system, alignment, air conditioner, air filtration, cooling system, drivetrain, engine, oil, suspension, tires, transmission, recalls, and a host of other issues. The kiosk will even issue the key to a loaner vehicle if needed.

When the service is complete, customers can retrieve their car keys by scanning a special code they received via email. The kiosk processes payments via credit or debit card.

“The whole process of using the Kiosk from start to finish took about five minutes,” said Ford customer Donavon Black in a press release. “It took a lot of the pressure off and I didn’t have to worry about anyone trying to upsell me. It even asked me if I wanted to approve a dollar amount. It was all taken care of in one step right there at the kiosk.”

Not only is the kiosk intended to save time, but it also lets customers drop off or pick up their vehicles after hours. Ford says the kiosk is available 24/7.
