New Nissan Leaf Debuts in September, Arrives Before Year’s End

The next-gen Nissan Leaf EV will debut in September and go on sale before the end of the year, the automaker confirmed on Twitter.

Few other details were shared, but a September debut could mean we’ll see the new Leaf at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Leaf is expected to draw styling inspiration from the IDS concept that debuted at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. That car features a sloped roofline and Nissan’s signature V-motion grille. We’ve heard the next-gen Nissan Leaf will greatly increase driving range; the current model reaches 107 miles on a single charge. The new version could get close to the Chevrolet Bolt’s segment-leading 238-mile range. When we asked Nissan’s senior vice president of research and advanced engineering Takao Asami at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show if the next Leaf would compete with the Bolt, he said, “We can get to 200 or even 300 miles. We Can. The question is cost.”

Nissan already debuted the battery tech that is likely to be used in the next Leaf when the Renaut Zoe EV was unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show. That car uses a new lithium-ion battery pack developed in partnership with LG Chem, the same supplier Chevy worked with for the Bolt’s battery. The new 43-kilowatt-hour unit boasts 189 miles of real-world range in the Zoe, but that could very easily be expanded in the redesigned Leaf.

Also at CES, Nissan announced that the new Leaf will feature the automaker’s ProPilot autonomous tech, which will eventually be capable of level 3 autonomy. Stay tuned for more info on the next-gen Nissan Leaf.
