Mercedes-Benz Recalling Roughly 308,000 U.S. Cars for Fire Risk

Mercedes-Benz will recall roughly 1 million vehicles worldwide due to a fire risk involving a starter part. Of those 1 million vehicles, approximately 308,000 affected cars and SUVs are located in the U.S.

According to a regulatory disclosure filed by Mercedes, the fires stem from a flawed current limiter or fuse that can overheat and melt other parts after repeated attempts to start. The Detroit News reports that there have been 51 fires worldwide, and about 30 of those occurred in the U.S.

The problem affects certain 2015-2017 model-year C-Class, E-Class, CLA, GLA, and GLC vehicles. Mercedes will notify owners of affected vehicles beginning in late March, and will carry out the necessary repairs in July when the new parts become available. Dealers will install an additional fuse as a precautionary measure. Affected cars still on dealer lots will also get the fix, according to Mercedes.

“Any affected vehicles in inventory will not be sold until they can be outfitted with the additional fuse,” a spokesman told Automotive News.

Though Mercedes reported to U.S. regulators that 354,434 units are potentially affected, just 307,629 vehicles will actually be recalled, according to AN.
