Subaru took the wraps off the second-generation 2018 Crosstrek at the 2017 Geneva auto show and like its predecessor the new model is essentially a crossover take on the newly redesigned Impreza wagon with additional body cladding and more ground clearance. The 2018 Crosstrek is the second vehicle to move to Subaru’s new global platform (SGP), which is stiffer, more rigid, has a lower center of gravity, and an improved suspension setup.
The 2018 Crosstrek receives an improved 13:1 steering ratio versus the outgoing car’s 14:1 calibration. Additionally, active torque vectoring, which is standard on the Sport trim of the 2017 Impreza, has been added. X Mode, which helps maximize traction when driving on unpaved surfaces, has been added to the 2018 Crosstrek as a new standard feature. Under the hood is the updated 2.0-liter flat-four with direct injection that was also used in the 2017 Impreza. The engine should have the same output as the Impreza at 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, 4 hp more than the unit it replaces. An updated CVT will likely be the only transmission available on all models, and Subaru’s full-time symmetrical all-wheel drive system will be standard.
Safety remains an integral part of the 2018 Crosstrek, which is now available with the newest version of the automaker’s EyeSight system that includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Additionally, steering adaptive headlights, high beam assist, blind spot warning, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert are also available. An updated version of the Starlink infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen in upper trims should also be available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto should be standard across the entire lineup.
After its world debut in Geneva, Subaru will debut the U.S.-spec 2018 Crosstrek at the 2017 New York auto show in April.
