Volvo will build its first fully electric vehicle in China, the company announced at the Shanghai auto show today. The new vehicle will go on sale in 2019 and will be exported to global markets from China.
The automaker hasn’t specified the name of the EV it plans to produce, but we do know it’s an all-new model based on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). The platform, which is designed for electrification, will underpin the upcoming Volvo 40 Series small cars.
As well as being the world’s largest auto market, China is also the world’s largest sales market for electrified vehicles. As evidenced by the slew of electrified cars debuting at the Shanghai show, the country is looking toward electrification as a solution to air quality and congestion issues.
“Volvo Cars fully supports the Chinese government’s call for cleaner air as outlined in the latest five-year plan. It is fully in-line with our own core values of environmental care, quality and safety,” said Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive of Volvo Cars, in a statement. “We believe that electrification is the answer to sustainable mobility.”
Last year, Volvo vowed to sell a cumulative total of 1 million electrified cars by 2025, including all-electric vehicles and hybrids. The company also plans to offer plug-in hybrid versions of every model in its lineup.
