cars news 10: Elon Musk Tweets Electric Semi Truck Will Debut in September

Tesla isn’t just busy getting the Model 3 sedan ready for launch. The EV maker is also hard at work preparing a next-gen Roadster, an all-electric pickup, and even electric semi trucks. Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us a better idea on the timing of some of those products today in a series of tweets.

Tesla first announced its intention to produce an electric semi as part of its Master Plan Part Deux last year. At the time, Musk said Tesla could reduce the cost of cargo transport while increasing safety, and that the truck should be ready to unveil sometime in 2017. Now, we know when. Musk tweeted that the Tesla semi will debut in September.

When asked if the pickup truck was coming this year or next, Musk replied saying the unveiling was “18 to 24 months” away still. That puts its debut in the 2018-2019 time frame. We don’t know much about the Tesla pickup, but our friends at Truck Trend took a speculative stab at guessing what innovations it might offer the truck market. In addition to the pickup, Tesla is also working on a Model Y compact SUV to slot beneath the Model X, as well as a minibus Tesla says will revolutionize mass transit. Lastly, Musk once again confirmed that a next-gen Roadster is on the way, and that it will unsurprisingly be a convertible just like Tesla’s first model.
