As it prepares to introduce the industry’s first hybrid police car, Ford has released a video recapping its very long history in the law enforcement realm.

Believe it or not, Ford has been in the police car business since the days of the Model T. But in the video below, the automaker begins its narrative in 1950, when it offered its first official police package to law enforcement fleets. Not long after, the automaker debuted an updated police car with a 125-horsepower Interceptor V-8 engine. The video continues to detail the evolution of Ford police cars over the next several decades, including the inevitable decline in cylinder count.

A few days ago, Ford revealed its Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, which is based closely on hybrid versions of the Fusion. Accordingly, it comes equipped with a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle inline-four engine paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery. Specifically calibrated for police driving, the model can run in battery-only mode at speeds of up to 60 mph. The sedan is available for order this spring and will be delivered to police departments nationwide next summer.
