Opel will continue to produce cars for General Motors despite the sale of it and its British arm, Vauxhall, to PSA Group earlier this year. A new report from Reuters states that Opel will continue to make cars for Buick well past 2019 despite General Motors being forced to unwind its strategy of aligning Buick with Opel and Vauxhall vehicles. Before the sale, a number of Buick vehicles were either rebadged Opels and Vauxhalls or shared the same platforms.
A briefing at Opel’s Russelsheim, Germany, facility noted that PSA will continue to produce cars riding on GM platforms for the forseeable future. The Russelsheim plant will produce a large SUV that will have a Buick-badged variant and the Eisenach facility will build the Mokka X’s successor, which is a sister car to Buick’s best-selling model, the Encore crossover, according to an Opel spokesman speaking with Reuters. Buick recently revealed the 2018 Regal Sportback and Regal TourX, which are the first Opel-built vehicles to debut after the German-British brand was sold to PSA.
In addition, Opel also revealed that it will consolidate its legal entities into a new company, Adam Opel GmbH. This move will bring together business activities for both Opel and Vauxhall under one company and will be completed by the second quarter of this year.
