McLaren 720S Production Begins

Well, that was quick. A month after debuting at the Geneva Motor Show, the McLaren 720S has entered volume production.

The “Job #1” car was completed today in Surrey, England, the automaker announced. The hand-assembled vehicle bears a Glacier White paint job, just one of more than a few dozen colors available on the second-generation Super Series car.

Powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, the new McLaren produces 720 hp and is estimated to hit 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. In addition to a host of aerodynamic upgrades, it features a one-piece carbon fiber tub that saves 40 pounds compared to its predecessor, the 650S. The 720S is available to order now from McLaren retailers, and a configurator went live last month.

Now that it’s building the 720S, McLaren has officially stopped production on the first-generation Super Series, which included the 12C, 650S, and 675LT and their derivatives. In total, more than 7,000 copies were sold.

The 720S is the first of 15 new McLarens that will arrive by the end of 2022, the automaker says. As we previously reported, about half of the new vehicles will be hybrids, and one will be an all-electric hypercar. McLaren is targeting sales of 4,000 this year across 80 retailers in 30 countries.
