The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified over 300,000 Honda and Acura cars and crossovers that are part of the Takata airbag recall, stating these vehicles “pose a grave danger to drivers and passengers.”
The massive Takata recall involves approximately 70 million inflators that could rupture when deployed, causing serious harm or death to passengers. NHTSA, however, says 313,000 Honda and Acura vehicles have inflators with a 50-percent chance of rupturing, and the agency is urging the public for help in finding the affected cars and crossovers.
“These vehicles are unsafe and need to be repaired immediately,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, in a statement. “Folks should not drive these vehicles unless they are going straight to a dealer to have them repaired immediately.”
The affected vehicles include:
- 2001-2002 Honda Civic
- 2001-2002 Honda Accord
- 2002-2003 Acura TL
- 2002 Honda CR-V
- 2002 Honda Odyssey
- 2003 Acura CL
- 2003 Honda Pilot
NHTSA discovered these vehicles following recent tests by Takata. So far, 10 fatalities have been attributed to the Takata recall. The agency says eight of those 10 cases involved the aforementioned vehicles.
According to NHTSA and Honda, approximately 70 percent of the aforementioned vehicles have been repaired. Both are engaged in additional consumer outreach and media campaigns in an effort to find the unrepaired vehicles, and NHTSA has asked Honda to provide weekly reports on the repair progress.
