June 2016 Auto Sales: GM Drops 1.6 Percent, Ford, FCA Make Small Gains

Half of the year is already over, and General Motors is leading the Big Three in terms of overall sales. However, Ford and Fiat Chrysler managed to narrow that lead last month.

In June, GM’s sales dropped 1.6 percent to 255,210 vehicles sold. For the year, the automaker has pushed out almost 1.44 million vehicles.

Ford isn’t far behind, with over 1.35 million vehicle sales for the year, up 4.6 percent, and 240,109 sales in June, up more than 6 percent. While its car sales continue to slump, trucks continue to gain momentum and drive significant sales. The F-Series line was up 28.6 percent last month.

For Fiat Chrysler, Jeep and Alfa experienced the biggest gains. Total June sales came out to 197,073 vehicles, up 7 percent. For the year, sales are at 1.15 million cars.

Check out the list below for June 2016 auto sales winners and losers:

GM

Winner: Chevrolet Spark (6,559 sales, +70.1 percent)

Just like last month, the Chevrolet Spark made big gains in sales, perhaps due to the fact that it’s all-new for 2016. Its numbers haven’t yet caught up with the slightly larger Sonic, of which 7,583 units were sold.

Loser: Chevrolet Camaro (4,969 sales, -42.3 percent)

June wasn’t a good month for muscle cars. Sales for the Camaro dropped to 4,969 units last month compared to the 8,611 sold last June. The Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger also experienced double-digit sales declines. All three models are down for the year as well.

Ford

Winner: Ford Expedition (7,507 sales, +86.2 percent)

Ford updated the Expedition for the first time in a long while for 2015, and the large SUV is still going strong. A new 2018 Ford Expedition is expected to come out next year with an aluminum-intensive body. Despite the Expedition’s success last month, Explorer sales dipped almost 15 percent last month.

Loser: Ford Fiesta (4,064 sales, -49 percent)

Ford’s total car sales dropped 12 percent in June compared to the same month a year ago. The Ford Focus, Taurus, Mustang, and Lincoln MKS all saw double-digit declines, but the Fiesta suffered the most. Sales dropped from 7,971 last June to 4,064 this June.

FCA

Winner: Fiat 500X (1,156 sales, +257 percent)

The 500X brightened an otherwise lackluster sales chart for the Fiat brand last month. Sales for the small crossover are up 257 percent compared to last June, its second month on sale. Fiat sales were down 19 percent, with the traditional 500 hatch plummeting 51 percent and the 500L wagon dropping 48 percent.

Loser: Chrysler 200 (7,817 sales, – 58 percent)

Sales for the Chrysler 200 dropped from 18,560 units last June to just 7,817 units this June. Right now, FCA is trying to siphon off production of its poor-selling small cars to a third party so it can focus on more profitable models including SUVs and trucks.
