The hoverboard from Lexus was pretty cool, but Ford may have built something better. As part of its “The Boost” ad campaign, Ford used its 1.0-liter turbocharged I-3 EcoBoost engine to soup up a bunch of everyday items that don’t need souping up, including a skateboard.
The 1.0-liter EcoBoost (offered in the 2016 Ford Focus and Fiesta) is already a tiny and compact engine, but Ford obviously had to make some modifications to the skateboard to pull off the stunt. With a wider rear track and beefier go-kart wheels, the skateboard was prepped for its 123-hp donor engine. Ford commissioned action movie star Dolph Lundgren to introduce the board, but a stuntman was the brave soul to test the EcoBoosted creation on an open airstrip. The board undoubtedly has the capability to reach triple-digit speeds, but the stuntman wisely bails after reaching a relatively fast 60 mph.
In addition to the skateboard, the Ford EcoBoost engine is used to power a pitching machine that hurls baseballs at over 200 mph (typical machines pitch at around 90 mph). Lundgren, of course, aims the machine at the same stuntman who attempts to take a swing at the super-fast baseballs. Finally, Lundgren demonstrates an EcoBoost-powered blender, which the “Rocky IV’ villain uses to demolish fruit, silverware, wood, and even another blender. Check out the videos below.
