BMW 2002

Not to be confused with Toyota’s FJ80 SUV, “80-series” in BMW parlance refers to the fifth-generation M3 sedan and M4 coupe, whose chassis codes are F80 and F82, respectively. The first M cars to use different chassis codes than the models they’re based on, educated speculation indicates the expected M4 convertible will use F83; should BMW see fit to make a long-roof M3 (don’t hold your breath), it will get the F81 tag. Not to be confused with Toyota’s FJ80 SUV, “80-series” in BMW parlance refers to the fifth-generation M3 sedan and M4 coupe, whose chassis codes are F80 and F82. The first M cars to use different codes than the models on which they're based, the new models arrived at dealers roughly six months ago. Educated speculation indicates the expected M4 convertible will use F83, and a wagon version (don't hold your breath for that one) would get an F81 tag. Love it or loathe it, as soon as BMW pulled the wraps on the X4 it was apparent that if it built it, they would come. “They,” of course, referring people with willing to pay any price necessary to own what amounts to a 3-series hatchback. On sale for just a few months, 1889 people have taken one home so far. Speaking on the state of sports-car sales in the U.S. and Europe, BMW sales chief Ian Robertson said earlier this year that the “market is roughly half of what it used to be,” adding, “Post 2008, it just collapsed. I’m not so sure it’ll ever fully recover.” OK, so that’s depressing. Wherever the sports-car market is headed, we’re glad that 1938 diehards shunned his words and purchased Z4s of their own. Fight the good fight, people. With room for four and a combined 357 horsepower on tap from a hybrid powertrain comprised of a three-cylinder gas engine and a pair of electric motors, the i8 plug-in hybrid the first real-world BMW to fully embrace the future. Low and lean with the requisite supercar gull-wing doors, we found it’s driving dynamics to impressive for a any car, let alone a hybrid.
