SUV MPGs: 2019 Honda Passport vs. Blazer, Edge, Murano, and Others

Although gas prices have been relatively low for a while, who doesn’t want to save money at the pump? Affordable fuel prices have driven consumers to look into more spacious and high-riding vehicles such as the five-passenger Chevrolet Blazer and Honda Passport. So with two all-new vehicles (re-) entering the two-row midsize SUV game, it’s time to take a look at mpg ratings in that growing class. Here’s how the 2019 Honda Passport and Chevrolet Blazer compare against their main competitors—the 2019 Ford Edge, 2019 Nissan Murano, 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, and 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

To make it a fair comparison, we’ll focus on the six-cylinder or turbo-four engines. The Passport, Murano, and Grand Cherokee don’t offer anything under six cylinders, and although the performance-oriented Edge ST has a six-cylinder engine, we’ll focus on the turbo-four engine offered on the SE, SEL, and Titanium trims.

As we can see, the Ford Edge has a small advantage over the other models here—whether it’s with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. What’s also remarkable is that its 2.0-liter turbo-four engine produces the most torque of this group, so that’s a win-win for Ford (but 0—60 acceleration trails six-cylinder competitors). The Nissan Murano also does a decent job in the fuel economy game, but it has the least torque of the group.

Both the Passport and the Santa Fe have the same mpg numbers, but the Passport has more horsepower and torque, as well as a V-6 engine (instead of a turbo-four). The Jeep Grand Cherokee is right in the mix with the Santa Fe, Passport, and Blazer. And although its V-6 engine is not the most powerful, it’s the only model in this group that offers a V-8 engine, if you’re willing to sacrifice fuel economy.
