2019 Volvo XC60 T5 AWD Long-Term Update 3: Cruising

After finishing up the year in our Kia Niro long-termer, I’m finally ready to take the reins of our Volvo XC60. It has been a pleasant change of pace, and I’ve been enjoying the smooth powertrain and luxurious interior.

But I’m also starting to notice a few annoyances. The backup camera provides a decent view during the day, and I particularly like the 360-degree setting that provides a top view of the car as it approaches the parking space or curb. The edges of the screen can be blurry in this view, however. At night, it’s difficult to see your surroundings since the screen appears a bit dark and grainy. I recently spent some time in a Mercedes-Benz C 300, and the backup camera had a much crisper view at night.

Our tester comes with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous driving feature that helps steer, accelerate, and brake the vehicle. The steering assist keeps the Volvo within the lane markings most of the time, although it occasionally tries to veer a little too much to the left. The cruise control works pretty well, too, but we have a few qualms. Deceleration can be harsh when coming into traffic on the freeway. A quick press of the up or down button will adjust speed in increments of 5 mph, while a longer press allows you to adjust 1 mph at a time. These long presses are a bit of a hassle if you’re wanting to fine-tune the cruise control speed quickly.

As Scott Evans pointed out, there’s a particularly handy trait you don’t find on every one of these systems. The cruise control speeds up when you activate the turn signal to change lanes and pass a slow vehicle. This helps make the maneuver as quick and clean as possible.

Recently, I took a road trip and found the seats amazingly comfortable. I’m usually a little stiff after a few hours of driving, but not in this vehicle. I love how I can really spread my arms and legs out in the driver’s compartment. More on the interior space in the next update.
