Audi Adds Four New Plug-In Hybrids to Its Lineup

When the Geneva motor show kicks off next month, it looks like Audi’s focus will be on plug-in hybrids. Today, the German automaker announced PHEV versions of four vehicles in its lineup—the A6, A7, A8, and Q5.

Each model uses the same 14.1-kilowatt-hour battery and has about 25 miles of electric range based on Europe’s WLTP cycle. In the U.S., that number will probably be closer to 20 miles since the EPA tends to be more conservative. On a 7.2-kW charger, you should be able to recharge the battery in about two hours.

And while Audi hasn’t said what kind of power each model will make, it did promise that, depending on the model, you’ll have your choice of either a comfort version or a performance version. The latter will get a sportier suspension, the S line appearance package, and an electric motor tuned to provide more of a power boost.

To maximize EV range, the vehicles are programmed to use the regenerative braking system as much as possible. According to Audi, in most situations, you’ll be able to slow down using only the motor or a combination of the motor and brakes.

Audi also added three different drive modes. There’s a default Auto mode that uses the engine and motor together to maximize gas mileage, as well as an EV mode for when you want to drive on electricity alone. Finally, Hold mode allows you to preserve your battery’s charge for later use.

All four PHEVs will go on sale sometime this year, but so far, Audi’s been short on details. Look for more information after the official reveal in a few weeks.
