Last month, Porsche showed off the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport, a track-only version of the 718 Cayman meant for racing. With a sub-3,000-pound curb weight and 35 hp more than its predecessor, the new GT4 Clubsport looks like it will be one heck of a race car. But how different will the upcoming street-legal GT4 be? From the sound of it, not very.
According to a report in Car Magazine, the new GT4 will trade the regular 718 Cayman’s turbo-four for a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six just like the Clubsport gets. It doesn’t look like it will be any less powerful, either. Car says to expect the new GT4 to make the same 420 hp as the race car. That will reportedly be enough power for the GT4 to hit 60 mph in about four seconds and top out north of 185 mph.
The street-legal GT4’s transmission will differ from the Clubsport, though. Like before, the GT4 will only be available with a six-speed manual. At least at first. According to Car, Porsche plans to offer an optional dual-clutch transmission that will likely improve both acceleration and lap times. Thankfully, the report says the PDK option won’t replace the standard stick-shift.
Expect the new GT4 to be lighter than its predecessor, too. Car says the hardcore Porsche has dropped about 110 lbs thanks to lightweight materials, thinner glass, hollow-spoke wheels, and fewer driving aids.
“The current formula is too convincing to change it for the sake of changing,” Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche’s head of sports car development, told Car. “Instead, we concentrated on making a very good car even better.”
There’s certainly a romance to the idea of a manual-only performance car, but even if Porsche does eventually add a PDK option, we have a feeling it will still be a blast to drive. And with the reveal reportedly scheduled for July’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, it shouldn’t be long before we get a chance to try it out.
Since we’d previously heard the new GT4 would get Porsche’s new 4.0-liter engine, we asked a Porsche spokesperson to clear things up. Unfortunately, they could only respond saying, “As a matter of policy, we can’t comment or speculate on potential future product.”
