Tesla Is Facing Issues Delivering New Cars to Customers

Tesla Motors appears to be in the middle of a crash course in logistics. The electric automaker recently announced that it has increased production of Model S sedans and Model X SUVs, but now it’s facing issues of getting those vehicles to customers.

According to CNN, Tesla built 18,345 units in the second quarter of this year. Only 78 percent of those vehicles, however, have been delivered to customers, with the remaining 5,150 still in transit to dealerships around the world. The report states this is double the amount of vehicles in transit during the first quarter of 2016.

This is an issue Tesla will obviously need to figure out by the end of this year. Through the first half of 2016, the automaker has built 30,000 vehicles. The automaker predicts production will jump to 50,000 units for the last half of 2016.

Looking beyond 2016, Tesla’s production numbers are expected to jump dramatically, especially with the upcoming Model 3, which the automaker claims will be ready for delivery by the end of 2017. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently said the automaker is prepared to boost production to between 100,000 and 200,000 units by the end of next year, before pumping out half a million vehicles annually by 2018. That number is based on unprecedented demand for the Model 3, which has secured over 400,000 pre-order deposits to the tune of $1,000 each.
