Good news for heavy duty Bow-Tie fans—the Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis-cab trucks are rolling off the line and on their way to dealerships now. These Silverado trucks were unveiled in March at the 2018 NTEA Work Truck Show, well ahead of the debut of their 2500 and 3500 little brothers that are, uh, aesthetically challenged up front. (To be fair, the High Country is slightly better-looking.)
“When we decided to get back into the medium-duty segment, we were determined to build the truck our customers have been asking for,” said GM fleet VP Ed Peper in a statement. “We listened to the needs of fleet managers, truck drivers, technicians, and dealers to design a truck that’s easy to upfit, easy to drive, easy to service, and easy to own.” We’re just glad those things didn’t get any harder to do, although we’re thinking Chevy wouldn’t say so if they did.
Upfitters apparently love the new Silverado because of its clean, straight frame-rail design that has no rivets, brackets, or welds to get in the way. Seven cab-to-axle lengths are popular with housing and highway construction crews, landscaping workers, utility outfits, and the like.
But if you just have to have that crazy brash grille of the 2500 and 3500 HD models, Chevrolet notes that all Silverados will be available as chassis cabs.
