Porsche Announces Taycan EV Specs, Confirms 600+ HP

Last month, Porsche announced the production version of the Mission E concept would be called the Taycan. Confusingly pronounced “TIE-con,” the German automaker’s first fully electric vehicle will go on sale next year. Today, Porsche released more information on the Taycan’s production specs. Impressively, they aren’t all that different than the ones Porsche originally quoted for the Mission E concept (shown here).

Using two permanently excited synchronous motors, the all-wheel-drive Taycan will have a total system output of more than 600 hp. It will run from 0-60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds and hit 124 mph in less than 12. Porsche claims the 800-volt battery gives the Taycan a range of more than 300 miles and that on the right charger, it can add about 250 miles in 15 minutes. It’s not clear, though, whether that claim is based on the older, more generous NEDC standard or the newer, more accurate WLTP standard.

According to Porsche, instead of using a larger battery to achieve a longer range, it wanted to design a battery that could be charged more quickly. A 15-minute charge time might be longer than the time it takes to fill up a typical gasoline-powered car, but it’s still impressive. To make sure Taycan owners can charge their cars on road trips, Porsche also entered into a joint venture with BMW, Daimler, Ford, and Volkswagen to build about 400 fast-charging areas (each with multiple chargers) by 2020. Once complete, the network will ensure a fast-charger is always less than 100 miles away. At least in Europe.

Look for more information to be released as we get closer to the Taycan’s on-sale date sometime in late 2019.
