Which Subcompact SUVs Have the Most Cargo Room?

We’ve seen more than a few SUVs that seemed to forget that the “U” stands for Utility. Cargo space is especially important in subcompact SUVs, where the engineers are challenged to provide as much luggage space as possible in a small, city-friendly, easy-to-park package. Here are the five subcompact SUVs with the greatest cargo capacity.

5th Place: Buick Encore

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 48.4 cubic feet
  • Seats in place: 18.8 cubic feet
  • Base price: $23,915

Buick was one of the first brands to field a subcompact SUV entrant, and the just-updated Encore is still one of the most utilitarian vehicles in the segment.

Platform sharing

The closely related Chevrolet Trax has similar advantages but a smidge less cargo space.

Motor Trend’s take

Motor Trend likes the Encore’s ride and was impressed by the handling, though we wish it offered more active safety features.

4th Place: Jeep Renegade

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 50.8 cubic feet
  • Seats in place: 18.5 cubic feet
  • Base price: $19,090

For a brand with such a rugged heritage, the Renegade earns its cute-ute stripes, too.

Fun and functional

The cheeky little Jeep is brimming with character, but it’s also a serious cargo hauler with plenty of interior space for a vehicle of its size.

Motor Trend’s take

Motor Trend loves the styling and the off-road abilities of the Trailhawk version, but we lament the less than stellar fuel economy and badly behaved automatic transmission.

3rd Place: Subaru Crosstrek

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 55.3 cubic feet
  • Seats in place: 20.8 cubic feet
  • Base price: $22,570 (2017 model)

The Crosstrek is more of a hatchback on stilts, but that doesn’t affect cargo space.

All-wheel drive for all

The Crosstrek holds nearly as much luggage as the Honda HR-V, and unlike the other crossovers on this list, it comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Motor Trend’s take

The redesigned-for-2018 version is based on the freshly redesigned Subaru Impreza, which impressed the Motor Trend staff with its sharp handling and long list of safety features.

2nd Place: Nissan Rogue Sport

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 53.3–61.1 cubic feet
  • Seats in place: 19.9–22.9 cubic feet
  • Base price: $22,380

The Nissan Rogue Sport is slightly larger than the other SUVs on this list, but it’s not quite in the compact SUV class.

Impressive with seats down

The entry-level Rogue Sport S—which lacks the nifty Divide-N-Hide cargo shelving of its upmarket versions—has slightly more seats-down space than the Honda HR-V.

Motor Trend’s take

The interior fit and finish is impressive, but the Rogue is thirsty and not particularly engaging to drive.

1st Place: Honda HR-V

How much does it hold?

  • Seats folded: 55.9–58.8 cubic feet
  • Seats in place: 23.2–24.3 cubic feet
  • Base price (incl. destination): $20,405

Honda is the master of packaging, and it’s carefully relocated some of the HR-V’s mechanical bits to open up as much cargo space as possible.

Front-drive gets more space

In fact, the front-drive HR-Vs hold slightly more cargo than the AWD version because the driveline takes up less space.

Motor Trend’s take

Motor Trend likes the HR-V for its fuel economy and nimble handling, though we wish the engine was more powerful and less noisy.
