The next-gen Ram 1500 pickup has been spotted for the first time testing in production bodywork, and it looks like the new truck will offer an extended cab option, likely sold as a Mega Cab.
Though it’s the first time the Ram has stepped out wearing its production sheetmetal, there isn’t much to see, unfortunately. The prototype is completely covered in camouflage. Even if we can’t see what it looks like, we know a little bit about it. The next-gen Ram 1500 will likely arrive as a 2019 model year, and will feature a mostly steel body, despite competitors Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado moving to aluminum-intensive construction. The 1500 may still attempt to save weight using other methods, however. This appears to be a Mega Cab configuration, as the passenger compartment looks quite a bit larger than a typical crew cab.
The next-gen Ram is expected to offer six- and eight-cylinder engine options, possibly including a version of the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 if FCA can get out of regulatory trouble. A 48-volt mild hybrid variant is also said to be in the works. As we previously reported, Ram production is moving from the Warren truck plant in Michigan to the Sterling Heights facility, where the now-discontinued Chrysler 200 was built. The new Ram 1500 is expected to enter production in late January 2018.
