Volvo Partners With NVIDIA on Self-Driving Car Tech

Volvo has teamed up with artificial intelligence and computing company NVIDIA as it prepares to bring highly automated cars to market by 2021. The collaboration also includes Autoliv, a manufacturer of automotive safety systems.

The partnership will leverage NVIDIA’s computing platform for autonomous driving. This technology will help Volvo and Autoliv develop advanced software for self-driving cars under a joint venture called Zenuity. Eventually, the software may be sold to third-party manufacturers.

“This cooperation with NVIDIA places Volvo Cars, Autoliv and Zenuity at the forefront of the fast-moving market to develop next-generation autonomous driving capabilities, and will speed up the development of Volvo’s own commercially available autonomous drive cars,” said Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson in a statement.

Volvo is aiming to offer Level 4 self-driving cars by the beginning of next decade. Based on the SAE definition, Level 4 cars can drive themselves without human intervention in most situations.

Of course, this isn’t Volvo’s first foray into self-driving vehicles. This year, the automaker is testing a fleet of self-driving cars on the roads around Gothenburg, Sweden. The project is set to expand to other cities including London by 2018. Meanwhile, Volvo is now testing a driverless mining truck and a driverless garbage truck.
