Nissan Offers Standard Auto Emergency Braking on Seven Models for 2018

Automatic emergency braking is expected to come standard on almost every new vehicle sold in the U.S. by no later than early next decade. Nissan is getting a head start on the game by bringing the safety feature to more vehicles for the 2018 model year.

Seven Nissan vehicles will come standard with AEB, including the 2018 Altima, Murano, Leaf, Pathfinder, Rogue and Rogue Sport, Maxima, and Sentra (except manual transmission-equipped and NISMO versions). Select Armada SUVs will also feature standard AEB. For the 2018 model year, the automaker wants to sell one million vehicles with this technology, which would more than double sales of its AEB-equipped cars from previous model years.

“The big news here is that we’re making AEB standard across all grades of our best-selling models,” said Michael Bunce, vice president of Product Planning for Nissan North America, in a statement. “This increased AEB availability is part of our ongoing commitment to help reduce fatalities while realizing our comprehensive vision of Nissan Intelligent Mobility.”

Last year, 20 major automakers formed a pact to make automatic emergency braking a standard feature on new cars by September 1, 2022. Along with Nissan, these automakers include Audi, BMW, FCA, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo. AEB systems use special sensors to detect impending crashes and apply the brakes for the driver, reducing the severity of collisions or preventing them altogether.

Nissan isn’t the only automaker to jump on the AEB bandwagon early. As one example, Toyota and Lexus committed to making AEB standard on almost all of their models by the end of 2017.
