New 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Details Revealed

Dodge opened the information floodgates when it debuted the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon at the New York auto show in April, but apparently the automaker held back a few tidbits about the new muscle coupe. Here are a few new details revealed today.

The Challenger Demon makes 808 hp and 717 lb-ft of torque on 91-octane pump gas, or 840 hp and 770 lb-ft on race gas, from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. We knew there were substantial differences between this engine and the Hellcat’s, but now we know just how much changed (hint: a lot). Dodge says 62 percent of the Demon’s engine is new compared to the Hellcat’s supercharged 6.2-liter. New components include the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, supercharger, and even the engine block. Though many parts are different, the Demon and Hellcat still share things in common. Both Demon and Hellcat cylinder heads are machined on unique CNC machines dedicated to those models, and both engines are dyno tested for 42 minutes at up to 5,200 rpm before being sent off for final assembly in Ontario, Canada.

The Demon features a forged alloy steel crankshaft with 90.9mm stroke that rotates on induction-hardened crank bearing surfaces. Powder forged connecting rods join the crank with forged high-strength alloy pistons that are cooled by oil jets with double the flow of the Hellcat. Fuel injector pressure has also been increased 27 percent and the oil pan has been designed for high acceleration (up to 1.8 g). Meanwhile, the drivetrain has been made beefier. The limited-slip differential uses a 230mm high-strength alloy ring gear, while the drive shaft has been made 20-percent thicker out of high-strength, low-alloy steel tube. The half-shafts have been upgraded with eight-ball cross-glide inner and outer joints, larger-diameter, 41-spline barshafts, and high-alloy steel inner and outer stub shafts.

In the release, Dodge also listed a bunch of fun facts about the Demon. We’ve copied them in their entirety below for those who want to geek out on the car’s capabilities.

• 800 feet into a quarter-mile run, the Demon V-8 would empty all the air in the cabin of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – 105 cubic-feet.

• Demon V-8 cooling system rejects 258 kW of heat at rated power – that would boil 1 quart of water at room temperature in 1.2 seconds. The heat rejected is equal to 250 electric toasters.
• At rated power, high-octane fuel flows at 1.36 gallons per minute. Typical shower head flows at 2 gallons per minute.
• On each power stroke, piston and connecting rod is loaded with 11 tons of force – equivalent of 5 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demons. This happens more than 50 times a second @ 6,300 rpm.
• Torque Reserve and TransBrake combined generate 317 lb-ft. of incremental torque, for total launch torque of 534 lb-ft.
• The driveline sees 11,164 lb-ft. of ring gear torque at launch. Results in a 1.8 g launch.
• More than 1 ton (2,500 pounds) transferred from front to rear wheels at launch.
