Lyft, nuTonomy Partner on Self-Driving Cars

Lyft has formed a partnership with nuTonomy, a developer of autonomous car software. The two companies will work together on ways to enhance passenger comfort and safety in self-driving cars.

Under the partnership announced today, the companies will explore how autonomous cars can communicate with riders, as well as the passenger experience related to routing, booking, and the performance of the vehicle’s driving system. The collaborative research effort will take place in Boston, where nuTonomy has been testing autonomous electric cars since the beginning of this year.

nuTonomy is a new company that formed in 2013, not long after ridehailing company Lyft was founded in 2012. Last year, nuTonomy started a trial autonomous taxi service in Singapore, beating Uber to the punch on such a program. By 2018, it plans to create a full fledged self-driving mobility-on-demand service in the country.

Meanwhile, Lyft has already formed other partnerships on self-driving cars. It recently announced a collaboration with Waymo, the autonomous car project that spun off of Google, although the exact details of the deal remain unknown. Lyft has also teamed up with General Motors to offer short-term-use Chevrolet vehicles to Lyft drivers and eventually bring out autonomous Bolt taxis.
