Refreshing or Revolting: 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

With the current flagship sedan on sale since the 2014 model year, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been refreshed with lots of new tech and subtle styling updates. Here is a look at the aesthetic changes to the German flagship sedan.

Up front, all 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans now sport the grille from the pre-refresh V-12 model. That new grille is complemented by revised headlights and lower fascia. New round headlights are offset by three LED light tubes above and on the inside of the housing and three LED bulbs on the outer edge. The front fascia features a distinct body-colored piece below the lower air intakes, which are more prominent than before.

From the side, things don’t change much. The S-Class still features a long wheelbase that gives it a commanding presence, and now there are new 20-inch wheel designs available to further improve the full-size luxury sedan’s stance.

Around back, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan gets new LED taillight graphics and a revised lower fascia with center-mounted LED back up/rear fog light and revised bumper exhaust cutouts.

Inside, the automaker has added three new upholstery choices (Silk Beige/Deep-Sea Blue, Magma Grey/Espresso Brown, and Mahogany/Silk Beige) as well as a new three-spoke steering wheel and the latest version of the COMAND multimedia system.

Last week, we looked at the refreshed 2018 Hyundai Sonata, which got mixed reviews.

Joel Bauman thought that the Sonata “Looks a lot better!” Other positive comments include dfschim, who said, “Refreshing.  Looks like a Sonata again instead of a Subaru.” Ken Creten liked the “Aggressive New Look” but was disappointed that there was no increase in power.

David Barlup wasn’t convinced, saying, “Hideous! [I] just threw up in my mouth.” Agnes Miragliotta says he is “Not a fan of the orca-like facelift Hyundai has been peddling for the past few years.”
