Lamborghini Urus SUV Will Make 650 HP From Twin-Turbo V-8

Lamborghini’s plans to build an SUV, nor that vehicle’s powertrain offerings, haven’t been a secret, but the model’s exact power output wasn’t known until now. In an interview with Automotive News Europe, Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali let slip that the standard Urus will make 650 hp from a twin-turbo V-8.

Lambo hopes the exotic SUV will help it more than double its annual sales. Last year, the sports car maker sold a record 3,457 units. Lamborghini plans to build 1,000 Urus SUVs next year and ramp up to 3,500 units annually by 2019. But that number could grow if demand is strong enough, Domenicali says. The SUV will debut later this year, according to AN, and will be built at Lambo’s factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy.

We’ve known for a while that the Urus would be powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, and that a plug-in hybrid variant would come later. According to Domenicali, we’ll see the hybrid Urus a year after the standard model arrives. AN says the Urus will go on sale in Europe by the second quarter of 2018, with a U.S. market launch following in the third quarter. The Urus will ride on Volkswagen Group’s modular MLB platform, which is shared with the Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga.

U.S. pricing for the Urus could start at around $200,000. The model hasn’t been officially announced yet, but once it is you can expect a line of well-to-do prospective buyers to form. Both the Huracan and Aventador have long waiting lists, and delivery can take six months to a year after ordering your Lambo.
