Chevrolet has officially started rolling out its rugged Colorado ZR2 pickup. On Friday, the first trucks made their way out of the Wentzville Assembly Center 40 miles west of St. Louis, Mo., bound for customer garages.
The deliveries start more than two years after Chevrolet debuted the radical ZR2 concept at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. In November 2016, Chevy confirmed the model would enter production.
Compared to the traditional Colorado, the ZR2 features functional rockers, beefed-up front and rear bumpers, and the first off-road application of Multimatic DSSV damper technology. Also enhancing off-road performance, the suspension gets a 2-inch lift and the front and rear track have been widened by 3.5 inches. Powertrain options are borrowed from the standard Colorado: a 3.6-liter V-6 with 308 hp and a 2.8-liter turbo-four making 181 hp.
Among the first group of pickups that were delivered is a special Red Hot Crew Cab destined for desert racing. The model will make its competition debut in the Best in the Desert event where it will be piloted by Chad Hall of Hall Racing, but not before the truck undergoes a series of modifications. Chevy says the racing truck will help it validate performance parts for the Colorado.
Customers who placed early orders will receive their Colorado ZR2s throughout the month of May. At a starting price of just over $40,000, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is now on sale nationwide.
