Watch Rhys Millen Set the EV Record at Pikes Peak

During the 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, which marked the 100^th anniversary of the race, pro driver Rhys Millen set a new record for the fastest time in an electric vehicle up the 12.42-mile, 156-turn hill. In just 8:57.118, Millen not only took the title in the EV class, but was second place overall in the competition.

Millen isn’t a stranger to either Pikes Peak or setting records on the course. Back in 2012, he managed to set a world record with a sub-10-minute time in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe, managing the stretch in 9:46.164, which broke his previous record of 10:09.242. In 2015, Millen was the overall winner and entered the record books again for being the first driver to win in an electric vehicle.

In the uncut video below, Millen climbs the 12-plus-mile hill in his 2016 Drive eO PP100, which uses a 50-kWh lithium-ion battery pack with seven electric motors to produce nearly 1,595 hp and 1,858 lb-ft of torque. While a sub-9-minute time was good, it wasn’t enough to beat Romain Dumas, who set a time of 8:51.445.
