Report: Mazda6 Could Get CX-9’s 2.5-Liter Turbo-Four

For those who would like a Mazda6, but need a bit more power, good news might be on the horizon, as a new report claims the Mazda CX-9’s 2.5-liter turbo-four could find its way to more vehicles in the Japanese automaker’s lineup. Speaking with Caradvice, Mazda North American Operations’ vehicle development engineer Dave Coleman said that the new engine can fit in cars where the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter can fit, which includes the Mazda6, Mazda3, and CX-5.

According to Coleman, the space used for the intake manifold is where the turbo will fit in since it’s been packaged to occupy the same amount of room, meaning it could eventually find its way under the hood of the other vehicles, particularly the Mazda6 and Mazda3 (Mazdaspeed3 anyone?). In the CX-9, the 2.5-liter turbo-four produces 227 hp on regular fuel or 250 hp on premium and a robust 310 lb-ft of torque from 2,000 rpm. Currently, the 2.5-liter turbo-four is mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission in the CX-9.

However, Coleman also stated that it’s up to the product planners to decide whether or not to offer a specific powertrain combination on a particular vehicle and noted that there are no prototypes fitted with the new turbo-four. “It fits. I’m not a product planner so I don’t get to make that call,” stated Coleman when asked about the possibility of putting that engine in the Mazda6.

Coleman also expressed his desire to stuff the new turbo-four under the hood of the CX-3 small crossover, which shares a platform with the Mazda2. “I’d love to put in a CX-3. But it only ‘hot-rod’ fits into a CX-3. It doesn’t production fit. The belts are rubbing on the frame rails,” he told CarAdvice.
