Pro drifter Ryan Tuerck just became the first person to drift the road course at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and now he’s given us a taste of his next mad-scientist project: dropping a Ferrari 458 engine into a Toyota GT86.
The video opens up with a bare-bones white GT86 frame, completely stripped of wheels, interior, and drivetrain. What we see next is the 458 supercar’s F136 4.5-liter flat-plane V-8 in all its glory, with various parts taped off and ready for installation. The music shifts to give us a sample of what the engine sounds like – a very different engine note from the twin-turbo Toyota 2JZ inline-six currently sitting in Tuerck’s Scion FR-S. In the 458 Italia, the rev-happy V-8 made an explosive 562 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque.
We see the Italian engine sitting in the Japanese sports car’s engine bay, but the “how” of the build has yet to be revealed. As the engine is positioned now, the Ferrari’s sculpted intake manifold rests well above the hood line. It also remains to be seen what transmission will be used, as the V-8 originally sat in a midship layout in the 458 Italia, and was joined to a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle. Who knows if the engine is in its final position or the builders just did a quick mockup for the video.
We’re left with the message, “Stay Tuned,” and we expect Tuerck to post more details on this insane swap in the near future.
