Ford used the auto show circuit to show off the Ford GT supercar in a number of different hues and paid attention to what caught the public’s eye before deciding on the eight choices for the 2017 model year.
As the automaker prepares to start delivering the cars later this year, it is offering a bit more detail on the final look for those lucky enough to get one of the roughly 250 that will be built each year with a price tag of more than $400,000 each.
The car will be offered in a choice of eight colors including the Liquid Blue of the show car that debuted at the 2015 North American International Auto Show and some of the colors shown to date on the auto show circuit. The car will also come in white, red, yellow, black, gray, silver, matte black and, of course, racing stripes. “These colors aren’t trendy, because Ford GT isn’t a trendy car,” says Barb Whalen, Ford design manager, color and materials, in a release. “It is a classic – a veritable race car for the road.”
The GT has a body made of carbon fiber, a material usually reserved for accents. Designers have left the expensive material exposed and visible across the instrument panel inside the car. On the exterior, customers can choose gloss, matte or “shadow black” paint to cover the carbon fiber trim.
“We walked a fine line with the color and materials in this vehicle – infusing energy through use of color and balance while working to ensure the raw appeal of a performance car still shines through,” says Whalen. “Everything in the all-new Ford GT was intentionally designed to express ultimate performance.”
To that end, buyers can customize their Brembo brake calipers if they don’t want the standard black calipers with their lightweight carbon ceramic rotors. Ford thinks customers will want others to notice the brake system with discs derived from Formula 1 and designed for low fluid displacement for better pedal feel and stiffness. “The all-new Ford GT represents the pinnacle American supercar,” said Brembo North America CEO Dan Sandberg. Ford says this is the first time it has offered customizable caliper finishes.
Performance brakes are necessary for the lightweight car that will be powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine capable of generating more than 600 horsepower. It is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The car showed its mettle by coming away a winner in the LM GTE class at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Look for touches of color in the Alcantara seat backs and dash, as well. The trim surrounding the passenger-side instrument panel can be specified in a color that matches or contrasts the brake calipers, racing stripes, or exterior hue.
