Report: Audi Not Planning Four-Door TT

We can picture the Audi TT looking handsome as a four-door coupe, but a new report says the automaker has scrapped the idea. Speaking with CarAdvice, Audi communications chief Peter Oberndorfer revealed the team isn’t planning to add to the TT lineup.

“I think the TT is an icon, and to do a family [car] out of that is quite difficult,” he said. “And especially in these times where we have to concentrate more and more, because we have to do gasoline and diesels on the one side, and electrification on the other side.”

It’s no secret that Audi is trying to save money where it can. Last year, we reported Audi was cutting $12 billion in costs by 2022 to fund its shift toward electric vehicles.

Earlier this month, Auto Express reported that the Audi TT four-door had been given a green light for production. The report didn’t reveal exactly where it got the information, but the idea didn’t seem so far-fetched, particularly because Audi showed off a TT Sportback concept in 2014. At the time, Audi introduced the sleek four-door as a “new member of a potential TT family.” But Oberndorfer dismissed the report, saying, “Where the recent stories came from, I don’t know. I don’t know about a four-door TT.”

“So you have to concentrate more and more and think about what you can do and what you can afford.” Oberndorfer added. “So we’re quite happy with one TT at the moment.”
