WE LIKE Updated exterior, 10-speed transmission
WE DON’T LIKE Dated interior, laggy 5.3-liter throttle response
With fabulous new exterior styling, a fancy cylinder deactivation system, and an automatic trailer light test, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 showed much improvement over the third generation. But its bumpy ride, the dated interior, and a hesitant 5.3-liter engine kept the Silverado from getting the Golden Calipers.
“There’s nothing linking the neat exterior design to the uninspired interior,” Christian Seabaugh said of the Trail Boss’ cabin. “It’s just a sea of black, speckled with bits of chrome and gray plastic.” Added Ed Loh: “Not budgeting a refresh for the interior seems a huge miss to me.” Compared to the Ram 1500’s interior, the Silverado’s cabin looks dated and “cheap for the price,” Scott Evans noted.
Ride quality was also an issue. When towing up and down Davis Dam grade, Chris Walton felt impact bounces in each of the two Silverados we tested there. Kelly Pleskot described the ride as “jittery” when she compared it to the F-150 or the Ram 1500. Evans similarly compared it to its rivals: “The body control isn’t as good, with significantly more roll in the corners. Likewise, the damping isn’t as good. This ride is busier and stiffer.” However, every judge applauded the smoothness of the High Country’s 10-speed automatic on Davis Dam and on the highway.
There are many things we like about it—the ease of getting into the bed with the standard corner step, three hooks on each corner of the bed, and the new Dynamic Fuel Management system, which can deactivate up to seven cylinders.
“Good power from the 6.2-liter, great tranny, OK ride,” Kim Reynolds summarized. “But blah handing, and the interior is dated.”
