2019 Volkswagen Jetta Nets 30/40 MPG City/Highway

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta debuted earlier this year with bigger proportions and a new set of transmissions. Now, the automaker has revealed fuel economy information for the compact sedan, and it’s a noticeable improvement from last year’s model.

The new Jetta produces 147 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. From this engine, the Jetta nets 30/40/34 mpg city/highway/combined when equipped with either the new eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual. Last year, the Jetta with the 1.4-liter engine netted 28/38/32 mpg with the six-speed automatic or 28/40/33 mpg with the five-speed manual. Although we haven’t yet tested the new version, the previous Jetta was able to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 8.4 seconds with the 1.4-liter unit.

While certainly respectable, the Jetta’s fuel economy numbers fall behind some competitors. The 2018 Honda Civic tops out at 32/42/36 mpg with its 1.5-liter turbo-four. Meanwhile, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra sedan nets an estimated 32/40/35 mpg from its 1.4-liter turbo powerplant.

American drivers are still concerned with fuel economy even as larger vehicles including crossovers permeate through the market. VW developed the new Jetta specifically with North America in mind, and it was revealed recently that there are no plans to offer it in Europe. Expect the new Jetta to arrive in U.S. dealerships sometime during the second quarter of this year.
