2019 Toyota TRD Pro Off-Road Lineup Brings the Tundra Back Into the Fold

There is a lot of love for Toyota’s TRD Pro lineup, so we welcome the next generation of the off-road variants that use the 2018 Chicago Auto Show to take their bow.

For 2019, the engineers at Toyota Racing Development have worked their magic on the Tundra full-size pickup after a year’s hiatus, as well as new renditions of the Tacoma compact pickup and 4Runner SUV.

The TRD versions will be available this fall. Pricing has not been announced.

The trio get Fox 2.5-inch aluminum-bodied internal bypass shocks to improve damping for everything from rock crawling to high-speed desert running and better on-road performance, as well.

Off-road race vehicles traditionally have external bypass tubes, but Toyota went for a Fox shock that incorporates bypass zones inside the shock for a more cushioned ride that gets stiffer through the shock stroke for better bottoming resistance.

The suspension was tested and designed by TRD engineers in Plano, Texas. The front shocks are paired with specially tuned TRD springs for ride comfort and additional lift for the trail while dust boots keep dust and contamination out of the front and rear shocks.

The Tundra has rear leaf springs, the 4Runner uses the TRD off-road grade rear coil spring, and the Tacoma has progressive-rate off-road leaf springs.

Tacoma TRD Pro

The Tacoma TRD Pro is based on the TRD Off-Road grade and adds the Fox shocks with 46 mm pistons, TRD-tuned springs with an extra inch of front lift, and a larger front anti-roll bar. It has the 2.5-inch rear shocks, an updated front skidplate, and a new black chrome tip on the exhaust.

Among the upgrades is an available all-new TRD Desert Air Intake that moves the 278-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine’s air intake away from the wheel well where dust that gathers when off-roading. The air comes in from a cleaner space near the windshield.

Styling cues include TRD badging, projector-beam headlights with black sport bezels and LED daytime running lights, taillights with black sport bezels, and a black grille. The 16-inch TRD Pro black alloy wheels feature an offset that gives the Tacoma a 1-inch wider track, and they are shod with P265/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler Kevlar All-Terrain tires.

Interior updates include standard Entune Premium JBL Audio with subwoofer, amplifier, and integrated navigation. There are TRD Pro-branded floor mats and leather-trimmed seats with TRD logos on the front headrests. The Tacoma is built in San Antonio, Texas, as well as Baja California, Mexico.


Tundra TRD Pro

In addition to the Fox shocks with 46 mm pistons, the Tundra’s suspension gets an extra 2 inches of lift, and wheel travel is increased by more than 1.5 inches in front and more than 2 inches in the rear. The full-size pickup gets the new Rigid Industries LED foglights and LED headlights with more menacing black accents, a new grille and hood scoop, and an available moonroof. The truck has a dual exhaust with black chrome exhaust tips.

In the back, “TRD Pro” is stamped in the rear quarter panels, and the truck gets new 18-inch BBS forged-aluminum, five-spoke satin black wheels with Michelin P275/65R18 all-terrain tires. Under the front end is a one-quarter-inch skidplate.

Inside there are TRD Pro logos on the seats, red stitching on the dash, seats, and armrests, and emblems on the floor mats, shift knob, and center console. The Tundra is built in San Antonio.


4Runner TRD Pro

For 2019, the 4Runner ups its game with the Fox shocks and tuned front spring for an extra inch of lift and wheel travel. Here again the shocks get dust boots and a TRD roost shield protects the inverted rear shocks while a skidplate under the front protects the powertrain.

The off-road SUV gets a new roof rack for gear; a blacked out grille, LED foglights, and 17-inch matte-black TRD alloy wheels offset for a wider track. The tires are Nitto Terra Grappler P265/70R17 A/Ts. For the 2019 model year, the Entune Premium infotainment system is standard, and the 4Runner is adorned in TRD logos, emblems, and special red stitching. The 4Runner is assembled at the Tahara plant in Japan.

All three TRD Pro models feature Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes stability and traction control, brake assist, and smart stop technology. Standard on the Tundra and Tacoma are further safety technologies including a precollision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beams.

The 2019 lineup has a new exclusive color: Voodoo Blue. The other two choices for TRD models are Super White and Midnight Black Metallic.

The TRD Pro line dates back to 2014, an offshoot of Toyota’s racing and off-road heritage that goes back to 1979 and includes Baja and other race victories. To get the denotation the team had to give each vehicle unique styling as well as specially designed and tuned off-road equipment.
